Eyelid surgery

Our eyes are incredibly important for how we are perceived by others, and many people hear that they look tired and sad, even when that’s not the case. An eyelid surgery helps you achieve a more alert look and makes a significant difference to your appearance.

The expression "the eyes are the window to the soul" is common, and our eyes play a crucial role in how we are perceived by others.

If your eyes look tired, it often doesn’t matter how energetic you feel. Your whole body gives off a tired impression. Many people say that they could consider eyelid surgery even if they are generally skeptical about surgery to change their body. Most people want to have a youthful and fresh appearance without looking operated on, and eyelid surgery can make a huge difference in this regard.

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body and is subjected to wear from sunlight and constant activity due to blinking. All of this affects the skin, making it thinner and more wrinkled, eventually creating an excess of skin that hangs down towards the eyelashes or forms bags on the lower eyelids.

The eye is embedded in fat and other supportive tissues and is also stabilized by the eye muscles. This entire package is protected within the eye socket in the skull and covered by the skin. When we are young, everything is stable, but over time all tissues become looser. The skull also resorbs, providing less support for the eye, leading to a shift in its position and a slackened appearance.

In addition to normal aging, certain diseases can affect the eye, causing it to sink in or protrude more than it used to. There are also diseases that can affect the nerves and muscles around the eye, causing the eyelids to droop and cover more of the pupil. Overall, there are many factors to consider when assessing an eye before surgery.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

For the eyelids to look youthful, the skin should be tight with a clear crease, and a portion of the eyelid should be visible above the lashes. When the skin sags, it becomes wrinkled and hides the natural shapes. There are significant differences in our conditions, and for some, much of the eyelid is visible, while for others, only a little is seen.

To restore the natural and youthful appearance, excess skin is removed with an arched incision that follows the so-called glob line. This is the natural line that follows the eyeball where the eyelid folds when blinking. If the skin is tight above and below this line, part of the eyelid can be seen, and the eyelashes are free from hanging skin.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

The main problem with the lower eyelids is usually that the skin becomes slack. The skin sags, and the fat around the eye bulges out as bags. This can be corrected by removing skin, but there is a risk that the eyelid is pulled down instead of tightened. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze the problem to choose the right method.

Often, the problem is not that there is too much fat around the eye, but that the fat bulges through slack tissues. If too much fat is removed, the eye can lose support and sink in.

A lower eyelid surgery typically involves making an incision along the lash line, loosening the skin from the underlying tissues, and removing fat pads and excess skin. When done correctly, the scar is virtually invisible once it has fully healed after about a year.

Sometimes a different technique is required, preserving as much fat as possible to create fullness and support around the eye. The incision may be the same, but instead of removing fat, it is redistributed and the supportive tissues around the eye are stabilized.

How does an eyelid surgery work?

A consultation with one of our plastic surgeons is scheduled for 30 minutes. We will review your health and any special considerations regarding anesthesia and surgery. The most important thing is that you get a clear understanding of your conditions regarding the surgery and what you can expect.

It is helpful if you prepare in advance to know the result you desire and bring photos so that we can discuss them.

Typically, one visit before the surgery is sufficient, but if you feel uncertain about anything, you can return as many times as needed to feel confident before the surgery. We also stay in touch before and after the surgery so you can ask questions directly to your plastic surgeon or get help from our dedicated staff.

On the day of your surgery, you will arrive at the clinic and take a shower before the operation. Afterward, you will dress in the clinic’s robe and can rest in a freshly made bed. We do everything possible to minimize the risk of complications, including maintaining meticulous hygiene.

You will be given sedative and relaxing medication, as well as pain relief, to ensure you are as comfortable as possible during and after the surgery.

Normally, we perform eyelid surgeries under general anesthesia for optimal comfort, but if there are preferences or other reasons, the procedures can be done under local anesthesia.

Generally, it is possible to go home the same day, but if necessary, you can stay overnight to ensure the best possible result and safety. This is included in the cost of the surgery, as well as providing you with pain medication for the initial recovery period.

You will meet with your plastic surgeon or nurse for a follow-up after 1-2 weeks, depending on the procedure. After this, we will keep in contact to provide advice on how to take care of yourself in the best possible way.

You will schedule a follow-up appointment approximately 3 months after the surgery to evaluate the results and see an early final outcome. It takes about a year for the scars to mature and for the body to fully adapt to the changes.

Other methods

The key to a successful result is analyzing the problem and treating it in the best way possible. Since everyone has different conditions regarding skin quality, the natural position of the eye and eyebrows, the amount of fat around the eye, and many other factors, solutions for similar-looking problems can vary significantly.Eyebrows are positioned differently in individuals and descend at different rates. Sometimes a brow lift or a forehead lift can rejuvenate the eyelids so that regular eyelid surgery is not needed. As we age, we lose volume and fullness below the eye, but many lose this fullness at a young age. In such cases, a fill with a fat transplant or fillers can be the solution.

Complications and poor results

Bleeding, infection, and wound healing problems are the most common surgical complications. The risk is minimal, but for those affected, it is a significant strain. We do everything possible to avoid and prevent complications, and it is important for the patient to do the same.Smoking doubles the risk of all types of complications. To ensure the body heals as well as possible, it requires four weeks without smoking. Alcohol also increases the risk of healing problems, and it is important to be very moderate about two weeks before surgery.

When it comes to complications and unwanted results, they are covered by the clinic’s guarantee and corrected free of charge. It is important to know that not everyone can achieve the same results, and the goal is “the best possible result.” During the consultation, we point out what is specific to you and if there is anything in your conditions that we need to pay special attention to.
