This method is mainly used when the veins are extremely large and dilated. The technique has been used for a very long time, making it both tried and tested. During the operation, we make an incision at both your knee and groin and then remove the affected vein with a probe. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Boka tid för konsultationDepending on the chosen method for your varicose vein treatment, the recovery process can vary greatly. For example, you will always stay overnight with us if the surgery requires general anesthesia, while simpler procedures with laser, radiofrequency, or foam allow you to go home immediately afterward.
Regardless of the treatment, we always want you to come for a follow-up visit about two weeks after the procedure. We will then schedule additional check-ups as needed to see if further treatment is required to achieve the desired result. In most cases, the final result can be seen after six months.

Foam Treatment
For certain types of varicose veins, sclerotherapy can be used. This relatively simple procedure involves injecting liquid or foam into the vein causing the varicose vein. This forces the blood to find a new, functional path, causing the old vein to deactivate and wither away. A downside is that varicose veins may sometimes return.
Thermoablation
Here, we seal the vein from the inside using heat, either with laser or radio frequencies. Using ultrasound, we get an exact position of the vein before inserting a fine needle either at the foot or knee. The advantage of this varicose vein treatment is that the recovery time is very mild. It only requires local anesthesia, and you can go home the same day.
Phlebectomy
Our clinic uses this method when the veins are relatively large but also short and twisted. In some cases, we combine this with radiofrequency or laser treatment for the best possible result. The procedure leaves no noticeable scars as we remove the affected vein through only a few small holes. The operation is performed under both local anesthesia and general anesthesia.
Information about Varicose Veins
Varicose veins, also known as varices, are abnormally enlarged blood vessels that often twist and bulge in a specific area of the body. Varices can cause problems from both a cosmetic and medical perspective. Naturally, it can be unpleasant to show your legs at the beach or wear revealing clothes if you suddenly develop many twisted varicose veins. In some cases, you may also experience physical discomfort such as sores, eczema, a feeling of heaviness, tenderness, pain, and itching.
The reason for varices is often that the valves in the veins become damaged and cannot always transport blood in the correct direction. This leads to increased pressure, which in turn causes the veins to start twisting. Typically, women are more affected by varicose veins, but it is not uncommon for men to develop them as well. The primary reason it affects women first is that varicose veins often occur during pregnancy.
However, both women and men can develop varices as they get older, which is largely due to genetic factors. The type of work you do can also play a significant role, especially if you stand for long periods or walk all day. Unfortunately, there is no established, fundamental cause for why some people develop varicose veins, but fortunately, they can be removed – a service we provide at our clinic!
We always want our patients to achieve the best possible results. Therefore, you will always be invited to our clinic for a consultation where we examine you and evaluate your conditions and possibilities. Every person is unique, so we must also perform an ultrasound examination to accurately map how your veins look. This is a safety measure to ensure there are no blood clots.
Together with your doctor, you will review the various treatment methods and their pros and cons, potential risks, costs, and waiting times. Please write down all your questions before visiting us to avoid forgetting anything you have been wondering about. If everything goes well and you feel ready to proceed with treatment as soon as possible, you will also have the opportunity to schedule a time for surgery.
Complications and poor results
To avoid unnecessary complications, it is essential to follow your doctor’s advice and instructions. For example, you should use compression stockings if you travel by plane or have a job where you sit for long periods. If you expose yourself to the sun, it is important to protect yourself with a high SPF. The risks include:
- Venous thrombosis: Rare but possible.
- Thrombophlebitis: Inflammation of the veins.
- Discoloration: Can occur with foam treatment.
- Temporary reduced sensation: Can occur with phlebectomy.
If you feel irritation in the area around the varicose vein, it could be thrombophlebitis, which we will examine during the first follow-up visit. It is important to be vigilant about other complications such as venous thrombosis, which often manifests as severe pain, swelling, and in some cases, difficulty breathing. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is crucial to contact a doctor immediately.
